Abstract

Oikoumenè comes from the Greek Participium Praesentis Passivum Feminum form of the verb oikeô, which means “to dwell,” “to abide,” or “to inhabit.” Literally, oikoumenè means “that which is inhabited.” However, this participium has a special meaning as a noun. In the first sense, oikoumenè describes a geographical area: the inhabited world (Lk 4:5, Rom 10:18, Heb 1:6, etc.). The method used in the preparation of this paper is by collecting information from various media, sites on the internet, literature study, which is research that focuses on important issues surrounding qualitative methods. The Catholic Church views the ecumenical movement as an important effort to restore unity among separated Christians. In contrast, the richness of denominations is seen as God's unique work for His church. The Roman Catholic Church views ecumenism as a significant effort to restore unity among divided Christians, in line with Jesus' prayer in the Gospel of John 17:21. Although history shows that divisions exist due to differences in doctrine, worship practices, and organizational structures, the Catholic Church insists that the ecumenical movement is not intended to eliminate denominational identity. Rather, denominational differences are seen as God's richness and unique work for His church.
