This study examines the role of the principal at SMA Negeri 1 Tarutung. The objectives of the research are: to identify the principal's role in improving the quality of education at SMA Negeri 1 Tarutung, to understand the efforts made by the principal to enhance educational quality, and to determine the challenges faced by the principal in this regard. The study adopts a descriptive approach with a qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis was conducted using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. To verify the validity of the data, triangulation of methods and sources was used. The findings describe the principal's role as an educator, providing guidance and direction to the school community. As a manager, the principal successfully implements the school's vision and mission, involving the school community in shaping these objectives. The principal also participates in managing school administration, student administration, and the administration of facilities and infrastructure. As a supervisor, the principal organizes workshops to assist educators in curriculum development and lesson planning. As a leader, the principal motivates teachers and staff, and as an innovator, fosters harmonious relationships within the school community. Additionally, as a motivator, the principal creates a conducive working environment. Efforts made by the principal to improve educational quality include providing guidance to educators and staff, supporting teacher competence through workshops, and encouraging teachers to become part of the "Guru Penggerak" (Teacher Driving Force) initiative to enhance school quality. The challenges faced by the principal include difficulties in time management due to serving as the head of the MKKS (Principal's Work Meeting), technology illiteracy among some teachers, and the presence of underperforming teachers. Therefore, this study concludes that the principal's roles as educator, manager, administrator, supervisor, leader, innovator, and motivator are crucial in promoting the smooth development of the school.
